I cannot tell you how many times people have called me for our Eczema Body Butter when, in fact, they had Psoriasis!
While both skin ailments have symptoms in common, they have wholly different "relief" needs. Psoriasis is an often uncomfortable condition in which the immune system attacks the skin. As cells turn over more quickly, the itchy, silvery plaque stacks up on heavily reddened skin. There are five main types of psoriasis: plaque, guttate, inverse, pustular and erythrodermic. Plaque psoriasis, also known as psoriasis vulgaris, makes up about 90 percent of psoriasis cases; and, it is this type of psoriasis that our Body Butter targets.
Psoriasis is generally thought to be a genetic disease that is triggered by environmental factors. Symptoms often worsen during winter and with certain medications, such as beta blockers or NSAIDs. Infections and psychological stress can also play a role. The underlying mechanism involves the immune system reacting to skin cells. There is no cure for psoriasis; however, various treatments can help control the symptoms.
Psoriasis is classified as an auto-immune illness and is characterized by inflammation affecting the skin, including redness, pain, sometimes localized heat, and, dry and cracked patches of skin. Injury to the skin layers due to scratching are a major catalyst for inflammation. It is therefore very important to keep any excessive and inappropriate inflammatory response to a minimum.
Green Tea is an antioxidant powerhouse that helps neutralize the free radicals that cause swelling and inflammation. Green Tea includes beta carotene, vitamins C and E and selenium, that can prevent damage to your skin cells. When the inflammatory process persists and becomes chronic, free radicals are permanently produced and have the capacity to cause tissue destruction. Antioxidants work by significantly slowing or preventing the oxidative – or damage from oxygen – process caused by free radicals that can lead to cell dysfunction and the inflammation that underpins psoriasis. It is the job of these antioxidants to neutralize or ‘mop up’ free radicals that can harm skin cells. Antioxidants are important for those with psoriasis, because they reduce the body’s ability to create unnecessary inflammation.
Green Tea's naturally produced EGCG, flavonoids and polyphenols also help reduce inflammation that can lead to lesions. They positively influence the balance between synthesis and degradation of extra-cellular cartilage constituents. This basically means that evidence for this action comes from inhibition of type II collagen breakdown.
